Reggae Sumfest 2025 Breaks Records with Historic Performances

Seven days – Seven events – One Festival

Montego Bay, Jamaica — July 20, 2025 — The 32nd edition of Reggae Sumfest will be remembered as one of the most electrifying and eventful stagings in its storied history. From Vybz Kartel’s long-awaited “King of Dancehall” coronation to powerhouse performances from international and local stars, the festival drew record-breaking crowds and unforgettable moments.

Friday Night – Dancehall at Full Force

Friday, July 18, belonged to Vybz Kartel (Adidja Palmer), whose coronation as “King of Dancehall” electrified the audience. Fans packed the Catherine Hall Entertainment Complex to capacity, with eyewitnesses describing “barely breathing room.” Kartel’s set sealed his legacy as one of Jamaica’s most influential performers.

The night also featured a fierce lineup: Masicka, Skeng, Tommy Lee, Govana, D’Yani, Jamal, Shanel Muir, Harry Toddler, Laden, Young Wild Apache, and the Warrior Love Band.

Highlights included Shanel Muir, who set the stage ablaze with her high-energy anthem “Hot Gal.” Rising star Young Wild Apache delivered a heartfelt tribute to his mother, vowing to buy her a house before anyone else—a message that resonated deeply with the crowd.

The showcase of emerging talent continued with Paula Surtees’ Creatives for Peace initiative, spotlighting Shady Natural and Angel Eyes. Shady’s lyrical strength won audience approval, while Angel Eyes commanded the stage with boldness, passion, and a charismatic appeal.

Though a brief disturbance caused momentary confusion in the VIP section, the performances carried on seamlessly, leaving the majority of fans immersed in the music.

Saturday Night – Reggae and R&B Royalty

Saturday, July 19, brought a star-studded bill of Toni Braxton, Tarrus Riley, Protoje, Lila Iké, Fanton Mojah, I Wayne, Pressure Busspipe, and Bugle.

International headliner Toni Braxton defied health challenges, revealing to fans that she has lupus, yet dazzled in a sultry performance. The seven-time Grammy winner, wore a shimmering & revealing costume and captivated the audience with her soulful delivery despite technical sound glitches—proving why she remains an icon of R&B.

Fanton Mojah stirred spiritual energy with roots anthems including “Hungry,” “King of Kings,” “Corruption,” and “Stronger,” reminding fans of reggae’s role as a vessel for praise and upliftment. He protested that a 20 minute set was too short for his musical catalogue of hits.

Tarrus Riley delivered a moving, award-worthy set, honoring his father Jimmy Riley and reggae legend Coco Tea, who both passed in recent years. In a touching surprise, Riley’s son Mekim and daughter Sahai joined him onstage with strong solo performances, signaling a new generation of talent in the ‘circle of life’.

Protoje, known for redefining contemporary reggae, thrilled fans with a blend of reggae, hip-hop, soul, and jazz. His performance featured his hit “Who Knows” with Chronixx, “Switch It Up” with Koffee, and his latest single “BIG 45.” Adding to the magic, Protoje introduced Lila Iké, who proved herself a rising star. Clad in a metallic blue green midriff pantsuit, she delivered crowd favorites including “I Spy,” “Where I’m Coming From,” “Biggest Fan,” and “Sweet Inspiration.”

A Festival of Excellence

Despite its moments of chaos, Reggae Sumfest 2025 reaffirmed its place as the greatest Caribbean reggae show, blending international glamour with authentic Jamaican artistry. Some fans left Montego Bay with memories of historic performances and the promise of even greater things to come. It was reported on RJR radio news (Beyond the Headlines) that some patrons lost personal effects and nursed injuries sustained from a “stampede” during Vybz Kartel performance on Friday.

As the festival grows, organizers face the challenge of balancing record-breaking attendance with the safety and comfort of patrons. What remains certain is that Reggae Sumfest continues to deliver the highest calibre of entertainment to Jamaica, the Caribbean, and the world.
