We have heard in recent years that we are moving towards a paperless society, I don’t know about that! Paper is so essential to our very existence, some of us have gotten so used to using paper especially for hygienic purposes, we don’t see ourselves going back to the “stone age”, although paper is made out of stone, but not for that purpose, or even the “leaf age”!
On a serious note though, there have been environmental concerns, with the hewning down of trees, especially the coniferous ones which are said to have the longest fiber, that helps to make stronger paper.
In ancient times, paper was made in Egypt from the papyrus plant and the paper was named papyrus, and in some places animal hide was used.
With the onset of global warming because of the reduction of the trees and the increase of carbon dioxide in the environment, individuals have in their own way found solutions to help to offset these challenges and to balance the ecosystem?
There has been, what I would call a move to solve this challenge in what would be deemed the use of unconventional means of making paper. A few of the materials used will be of no surprise to individuals who are abreast of these changes.
The companies that manufacture papers from these materials do seek to leave little or no carbon footprint during the process of production. I say, these materials are indeed great alternatives to trees!
Here is a list of some of the alternative materials that are used and some links to show the end products:
